Houses image
Boarding students are split among four houses, House Seiran, House Yosamu, House Toppuu, and House Shunrai. Houses reflect specific events in nature and attributes that are exemplified by students within each placement. House rivalries are discouraged in all areas, including many school sports. This is exemplified by the main dining hall of the school, which does not separate students by house, instead allowing students to sit by whomever they'd like. In this sense, houses are more of a reflection of learning style than a separate aspect of school, as each house is characterized by the creative mentality of its members.

Houses Overview

(Left to right, top then bottom) Houses Seiran, Toppuu, Yosamu, ShunraiStudents of Mahoutokoro are sorted upon entry into one of four houses. Houses are designated by the learning styles and innate skills of each student, grouped into four main categories.

House system

The house system of Mahoutokoro was designed to provide students with academic resources according to their specific learning needs. While house pride is present and comforting, there is little hostility between houses in a competitive manner. Students are not restricted from the common rooms of houses other than their own, and are seated together in the dining hall rather than apart.

Sorting

The process of house sorting is a semi-private affair that allows students time to learn about the possibilities of their placement before sorting occurs. A long, papyrus scroll is displayed open at the head of the main hall. Students may approach any time throughout the course of their first day and place their hand upon the center. The kanji of their sorted house will appear, along with a brief narrative explaining the honor of their house placement.
Each house represents a long history of achievements and noble attributes. Students rarely experience regret for their house placements, as the family they inherit is also a member of the deep prowess found at Mahoutokoro.

Mahotokoro is known for its low student population and high academic prowess, as well as the uncharacteristic process of allowing "day students" to attend classes up to four years before boarding.

Day students

Non-boarding "day" students are permitted to attend Mahoutokoro starting at 7 years of age. Younger students will take introductory magic courses, learn the basics of spells and potions, as well as get a general feel for the pace of school.
Day students are required to wear designated uniforms during attendance, whereas boarding students only wear them in accordance with certain times. Day students may only access daytime classes and are provided with one lunchtime meal in the main hall during midday.
Boarding students are not required to start as day students, and many day students find themselves entering as boarding students with the same class level as those who did not attend before boarding. Being a day student may improve academic ability, allowing students to board at a higher level, but this is not always the case. Many times, students benefit from being a day student by simply placing them at a level suitable to confidently begin normal magic classes.
