Mahotokoro is known for its low student population and high academic prowess, as well as the uncharacteristic process of allowing "day students" to attend classes up to four years before boarding.

Day students

Non-boarding "day" students are permitted to attend Mahoutokoro starting at 7 years of age. Younger students will take introductory magic courses, learn the basics of spells and potions, as well as get a general feel for the pace of school.
Day students are required to wear designated uniforms during attendance, whereas boarding students only wear them in accordance with certain times. Day students may only access daytime classes and are provided with one lunchtime meal in the main hall during midday.
Boarding students are not required to start as day students, and many day students find themselves entering as boarding students with the same class level as those who did not attend before boarding. Being a day student may improve academic ability, allowing students to board at a higher level, but this is not always the case. Many times, students benefit from being a day student by simply placing them at a level suitable to confidently begin normal magic classes.
